Strawberries - small fruits full of surprises

25.05.2023.Strawberries are a summer fruit that most of us enjoy, and we like them best in fruit salads, cakes or simply served with whipped cream or chocolate. Below are interesting facts about strawberries:
- The ancient Greeks believed that strawberries were a gift from the goddess Aphrodite - the goddess of love and beauty, and in ancient Rome they believed that strawberries had medicinal effects - they used strawberries to treat many ailments: from depression to fainting, kidney stones, bad breath and sore throats.
- In France, where strawberries are considered an aphrodisiac, this fruit is served in the form of soup as a traditional breakfast for newlyweds.
- Strawberry is a perennial plant, belongs to the rose family and is the only fruit that has seeds on the outside of the fruit.
- There is a museum dedicated to strawberries in Belgium. In the shop located within Le Musée de la Fraise (Strawberry Museum) you can buy everything dedicated to this fruit, from strawberry jam to beer flavored with this fruit.
- In the Middle Ages, strawberries were believed to bring peace and prosperity, so they were often on the menu at royal courts. In addition, it was also believed that sharing a heart-shaped strawberry with the person you like will make love blossom.
- Strawberries reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. In folk medicine, strawberries are recommended against headaches because they contain the same substances as aspirin in small doses.
- Strawberries contain a lot of nitrates that improve the flow of blood and oxygen to the muscles. People who eat strawberries before physical activity have greater endurance and burn more calories.
- California produces 80% of the strawberries in America. That amounts to over 900 million kilos annually. Almost 1/3 of the world's strawberry production is produced in the USA, due to favorable climatic conditions.
- A handful of strawberries contains more vitamin C than one orange. True, it should be borne in mind that only dark ripe strawberries grown under the strong sun, and not in a greenhouse, can boast of such richness. It is interesting that this vitamin will remain in frozen strawberries in almost the same amount as in fresh ones
